El harén de Fatema es muy distinto del que nos evoca la imaginería oriental, es un harén de mujeres, madres, esposas, hijas, tías y abuelas que vivendentrode la casa, imposibilitadas de cruzar solas el umbral. Ante nosotros se despliega la vida de esa niña que poco a poco va entendiendo los poderes femeninos dentro de la casa y las diferentes formas de afrontar esa vida.

Mernissinos muestra sus mujeres, con sus fantasías y sueños, incluido el «sueño en el umbral», el mundo masculino que se extiende más allá de esos murosde la casa y la historia de una niña enfrentada a los misterios del tiempo y el sexo durante la historia reciente del mundo musulmán.
