I picked up Uzodinma Iweala's Beasts of No Nation last week nudged by a memory of the positive press the book got in late 2005. They have nothing of the power of Akpan's countryman Uzodinma Iweala's searing novel about a child soldier, Beasts of No Nation.. If we define art to mean revealing of the truth and speaking to the human condition, there has been no art whatsoever since the nation's founding. For a book of less than 150 pages, Beasts of No Nation really packs quite a punch, yet it is a very simply told story. Has never lived on the African continent. I'm sure he's happy to get his story out there, but I'd think it must feel at least a little strange at some level. Novelist Adam Johnson who recalls his own visit there.
